Year 2

In Year 2 at Eggbuckland Vale, our students continue to grow and thrive as they become more independent and confident learners, mastering key academic skills and building strong relationships with their peers and teachers.

About this class

Book Bag:

All children require a book bag in which to store and transport reading books, spelling books, home-school books and letters.

Water bottle:

Please make sure that your child brings water to school and that their bottle is named.

Fruit & Snack:

ALL children in Year 2 continue to be provided with one piece of fruit per day.

However, children are invited to bring a healthy snack (in line with school guidelines) for their morning play time snack, should they wish.

PE Days:

Jellyfish will have PE on a Monday and Friday.

Seals will have PE on a Wednesday and Friday.

On PE days, please can your child come to school in their PE kit.

Reading:

Your child will bring home a reading book from our phonics scheme or our accelerated reader programme, ensuring their text closely matches their reading ability. Please find time to read with your child at home at east four times a week and record all your reading in your home-school reading record book. Reading will be a main focus in Year 2 and your support at home is greatly appreciated.  The types of questions you can ask your child when they read to you can be found on this page; these questions will develop their understanding of the texts they are reading.  Some useful websites about helping your child to read also feature on this page.

Spelling:

Spelling tests take place on a Friday.

These are linked to our new Spelling and Grammar scheme (Essential Letters and Sounds: Essential Spelling).

Please find time to practise your spellings at least 3 or 4 times each week.

Maths

From the beginning of the Spring term, the children complete a times tables test each week.  They have 10 minutes to complete as many questions as they can.  There are lots of ways to support your child with learning their times tables; teaching them any games, 'quick tricks' or other strategies you know will help to increase their fluency and recall, and support their learning in other maths topics.

Children will begin completing times tables tests in Terms 3 and 4 and in Terms 5 and 6 they will also include related division facts. The attached links show you examples of these tests.

Children can practise their maths skills using their 'Sumdog' login details. Please visit www.sumdog.com

They can also use 'Times Table Rock Stars' and 'Numbots'.  Please visit www.ttrockstars.com or www.numbots.com

Passwords for these websites can be found in their reading diaries.
