We believe in giving our children the opportunity to develop leadership skills, having a voice in school decision making and generally learning to contribute positively to our school and wider community.
The roles and responsibilities for the children include House Captains, School Council roles in each class and the DEC, Ocean Ambassadors, Eco team members and our Food Critic group. These are all voted on by the children each year and provide a wide range of opportunities for children to get involved.
These opportunities aim to encourage our children to:
- Develop confidence and recognise their different abilities
- Prepare them to play an active role as citizens
- Develop healthy, safer lifestyles
- Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people
- To have a “voice” and to share their opinions and ideas with others
School Council
Elections for our School Council take place at the start of each academic year. Candidates can put forward their election speeches and classes elect a main and vice councillor from each class from Foundation up to Year Six.Our School Council meetings ensure our children have:
- A forum to voice their concerns and act upon them
- A structured opportunity to learn problem-solving skills
- An opportunity to take an active role in the organisation of the school
- An opportunity to experience a democratic process
Food Critics
Each class nominates one child to represent them as their Food Critic each year. The Food Critics work alongside our Kitchen Manager and her team, tasting food and sampling new items on the menu, providing feedback and informing their classmates of recommendations.
Ocean Ambassadors
Our Ocean Ambassadors play a key role in promoting shared understanding of the seven Ocean Literacy Principles. They meet to generate literature and images for display as well as putting together simple presentations for our school community to hear during school assemblies.
ECO Team
Our Eco Team is a group of children representatives from each class from Year One to Year Six who meet on a regular basis to ensure we are working as a community to promote ourselves as an eco-friendly school, with a focus on waste, litter, energy use and our school ground development.
House Captains
Year Six pupils are elected to hold the offices of House and Vice captains. They provide role models for the children throughout the school, help collect our school house points each week and play an active role in whole school assemblies.
