British Values and Protected Characteristics
British Values
Through our holistic and curriculum approach, we promote British Values which are defined by the government as:
- Democracy-The word democracy literally means “rule by the people”. We involve the children in decision making as much as possible.
- Rule of Law-We encourage our children to understand the importance of laws. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken.
- Individual Liberty-We promote and encourage freedom of choice and the right to respectfully express views and beliefs in a safe, supportive environment. We explain to the children that they are responsible for the choices they make.
- Mutual Respect-Children learn that their behaviour choices have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community should treat each other with respect.
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and belief-We encourage our pupils to become knowledgeable and understanding citizens who can build a better Britain for the future. Through our work, our pupils gain a deeper understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
Eggbuckland Vale Primary School takes every opportunity to promote these values though our whole school systems and structures, and through our assemblies. We challenge pupils, staff and parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values.
Protected Characteristics
The nine Protected Characteristics are actively promoted at EVPS through our school vision and ethos, our core school values and our curriculum. We recognise that it is important for our pupils to gain understanding of the world they are growing up in and show respect to the whole community. At EVPS, we celebrate diversity and appreciate differences and similarities. No form of discrimination is tolerated and we expect pupils, staff and parents to show respect for all.
The nine Protected Characteristics are:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race
- Religion or Belief
- Marriage or civil partnership
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and Maternity
