About this class
HomeLearning
Maths
We use Sumdog to set a maths task each week linked to the children’s current learning.
Reading
Regular reading at home will enable your child to make the best progression with their reading. We would like the children to read their phonics reading book at least 4 times during the week. Books will be changed every Friday. Children will need their reading books and reading records in school everyday.
Additional phonics learning will be sent home throughout the year.
Spellings
Spellings linked to your child’s phonics will be sent home once a week. Please practise the week’s spellings with your child in the front of their spelling books. At the end of the week we will do a spellings check in class.
PE days
Starfish-Wednesday and Friday
Puffins-Wednesday and Thursday
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
In June your child will take part in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. The phonics screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words.
Pseudo-words are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning. Pseudo-words are included in the check specifically to assess whether your child can decode a word using their phonics skills. All pseudo-words in the check are accompanied by a picture of an imaginary creature. Children are taught that when a word has a creature next to it, it is a pseudo-word. This is to ensure that they are not trying to match the pseudo-word to a word in their vocabulary.
The check is designed to give teachers information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. After the check has been completed, you will be informed of how your child has done and whether any additional support is being put in place.
Phonics information meetings are held at the start of the year and prior to the test being completed. Information on how you can support your child at home is also posted on Tapestry throughout the year.
Tapestry
Tapestry is used in Year 1 to share children’s learning. We also encourage children to share interesting news from home and the "Memo" function is used to ensure you have received important information.
