Modern Foreign Languages

The study of foreign languages teaches and encourages respect for other peoples: it fosters an understanding of the interrelation of language and human nature. Foreign languages expand one's view of the world and support children in developing more flexibility and tolerance.

About this curriculum

Intent

We aspire to expose our pupils to a broad and ambitious Modern Languages curriculum, which is rich in skills and knowledge, develops self-efficacy, kindles curiosity and promotes diversity and tolerance of other cultures. Our Modern Languages curriculum will give pupils the opportunity to:

  • use language skills, receptively and productively, for communication in the real world, for practical purposes, for their immediate needs, interests and beyond and to express and justify opinions;
  • develop their confidence and autonomy to access new and unfamiliar language through the use of decoding skills brought about by the explicit teaching of phonics and sound patterns;
  • work towards becoming a fluent and spontaneous speaker of the foreign language.

Implementation

Spanish is our chosen modern foreign language that is taught in KS2 at Eggbuckland Vale.

We use the “Language Angels” scheme to deliver weekly lessons. The three ‘pillars’ of language learning (phonics, grammar and vocabulary) are all built into the scheme and, as pupils progress through the units and teaching types, previous language is recycled, revisited and consolidated.

Impact

Through high quality teaching of Spanish we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:

  • Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
  • Children will develop their language and communication through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of Spanish culture.
  • Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
